The Grand Antiquity Society has some wonderful documents which are invaluable for those researching their family tree and whose ancestors were burgesses of Glasgow. Some of the members of the Society can trace their burgess ancestors back 11 generations. This research may also enable people to discover that they can become members of this great and ancient society.
The document below lists the members of the Society from 1756 to 1939 and this is the ideal starting point for researching your family. If you find an ancestor, then you will also find at least two previous ancestors. The following abbreviations may make your research somewhat easier:
F : means the member is a Far Hand N : Means the member is a Near Hand
A Far Hand is a member whose parents/parents-in-law were members
A Near Hand is someone who is the first time member of the Society.
S of : means son of D of : means daughter of
SL of : means son-in-law of DL of : means daughter-in-law of
No. of tickets shown is the number of Burgess Tickets that the individual has presented to show that his or her ancestors were members of the Grand Antiquity Society of Glasgow.
Any of the above abbreviations followed by a number means that you should look at the member whose number corresponds to the number indicated. Using this method you can quite easily look back over the years to previous generations. For a more detailed examination of the historical background, it is worth looking at the individual’s record in the books “Application for Membership”. These have been digitised but not transcribed due to the level of work involved.
A Near Hand member will normally give information of the father or mother or in-law of the person and their father or mother or in-law.
A Far Hand member will lead you to at least 3 other ancestors and the “No. of Tickets Shown” will determine the number less one, ancestors.
