Stirling Incorporated Trades
The Stirling Incorporated Trades consist of the Seven Incorporated Trades of Stirling and what was called in the past: the Tolerated Communities. The Tolerated Communities consisted of The Maltmen; the Mechanics; the Omnium Gatherum and the Barber Surgeons.
The Mechanics are easy to define as they consisted of the Wrights; Masons; Slaters; Painters; Glaziers; and Plasterers, also Listerers or Dyers and Coopers.
The Omnium Gatherum is harder to define as they were much more flexible in who they allowed to join and varied from time to time, the main occupations covered included: Workmen; Hauxters; Carriers; Horse Hirers; and other Dargsmen of such employs or occupations. At a later date they mainly consisted of people involved with horses and cattle, but anyone who was willing to pay for membership was welcomed.
Thanks to the Stirling History and Archaeological Society who published the papers that were read at their meetings, we have excellent records of the history of each of the above.
